We have recently learned that a woman, Dr. Nihad Dashash, has been appointed assistant manager for primary health care in Jeddah. The decision, which placed Dr. Dashash and other women in prominent and leading positions, was a necessity due to our development, modernization and the needs of the community. With a woman in a leading position, she will serve the community better than a man, especially in matters related to women and the family.

Putting women into these responsible positions, however, must be done in accordance with their needs and in accordance with the conventions of a Muslim community.

The fact is that the application of and commitment to our religion should be a crown we are all proud to wear. Along these lines, we all know that we have a huge number of women who are well-qualified and well-educated in all fields. Their talents and abilities must be utilized. Furthermore, most government organizations and many private sector companies are in direct need of their specialties. These organizations and companies ought to prepare clear plans so that women can perform and take part.

Another thing which needs to be done is the setting up of a service organization in all areas to help women pursue their aims in places to which only men presently have access. We have plenty of women who are qualified and who would be proud and happy to serve their sisters in this way. I ask that women be given more chances to serve the community by placing them in places where they can be more effective. Beneficial solutions can always be found and the situation of women and the Saudi family will consequently improve.
