Three Homers for Snow in Giants Rout, No. 689 for Bonds

NEW YORK, 15 August 2004 — JT Snow belted three homers and scored five runs while Barry Bonds recorded his 689th career homer to power the San Francisco Giants to a 16-6 hammering of the host Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Friday.

Snow drove in four runs with his first career three-homer game. AJ Pierzynski also homered and drove in five runs, and Marquis Grissom added another homer for the Giants. San Francisco’s six-homer spree moved the team within one game of the Chicago Cubs in the wild card race.

Bonds finished up going two-for-two with three walks, two of them intentional, giving him 88 intentional walks this season.

The Giants slugger added two RBI to move past Frank Robinson into 14th place on the all-time list with 1,814 RBI.

Brad Hennessey (1-1) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings for the win. Brett Myers (7-9) was rocked for six runs on four hits with five walks over three innings and took the loss.

In Pittsburgh, Luis Gonzalez thumped a three-run homer as the Colorado Rockies beat the Pirates 9-3. Vinny Castilla and Preston Wilson also homered for the Rockies. Jeff Fassero (3-8) allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings with four walks and one strikeout for the win.

In New York, a three-run homer by Danny Garcia led the Mets past the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-6. Richard Hidalgo and Mike Cameron also homered for New York. Kris Benson (9-9) allowed six runs on eight hits over seven innings for the victory.

In Cincinnati, Khalil Greene cracked two homers as the San Diego Padres brushed aside the Reds 14-5.

Greene also had four hits, scored four runs and drove in four while Brian Giles, Ryan Klesko and Rich Aurilia added homers for the Padres. David Wells (7-7) went five innings for the win, allowing three runs on five hits.

In Atlanta, Woody Williams pitched seven strong innings to lead the St Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 triumph over the Braves. Williams (9-6) allowed one run on three hits and has now gone 11 decisions without suffering a loss. Albert Pujols and Larry Walker homered for the Cards while Jason Isringhausen tossed the ninth for his 32nd save of the season.

In Milwaukee, Russell Branyan and Lyle Overbay homered as the Brewers edged the Florida Marlins 6-4. Wes Obermueller (4-6) delivered seven shutout innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Dan Kolb pitched a scoreless ninth for his 33rd save of the season. Ismael Valdez (10-7) gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Alex Gonzalez homered for the Marlins.

Broussard Homers Again as Indians Sink Twins

Ben Broussard homered for the second straight outing to help the Cleveland Indians win their fifth game in a row, defeating the Minnesota Twins 8-2 in the American League Friday. Host Cleveland has now won nine out of 10 to move within two games of the first-place Twins in the Central Division. Minnesota, however, lost for the seventh time in nine contests.

Broussard, who bludgeoned a game-winning grand slam against the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday, added a three-run homer in a five-run first inning against the Twins.

Coco Crisp also homered for the Tribe for the second successive day while Omar Vizquel had four hits and scored two runs and Victor Martinez added two RBI.

In Toronto, Sidney Ponson and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Blue Jays 4-0. Ponson (8-12) went six-plus innings. He allowed five hits, striking out six batters and walking one, before the relievers pitched hitless ball the rest of the way.

In Boston, two home runs by Aaron Rowland led the Chicago White Sox past the Red Sox 8-7. Rowland had four RBI to help Jose Contreras (10-5) get the win. Contreras allowed four runs on four hits over six innings.

In Arlington, Laynce Nix and Alfonso Soriano homered as the Texas Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-3. Kenny Rogers (14-5) gave up three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings to record the victory. Francisco Cordero notched four outs for his 34th save of the season.

In Seattle, Ruben Sierra belted a grand slam homer and drove in five runs to steer the New York Yankees to an 11-3 win over the Mariners. Jon Lieber (9-7) allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over eight innings. Bernie Williams cracked a three-run homer and Jorge Posada added a solo shot for the Yankees.

In Oakland, grand slam homers from Abraham Nunez and Jonathan Buck helped the Kansas City Royals upset the Athletics 10-3. Joe Randa added a two-run homer for the Royals, who had two grand slams in one game for the first time in franchise history. Mike Wood (2-4) went six innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits.

In Anaheim, Brandon Inge totaled four hits and drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Angels 5-3. Rondell White had three hits for the Tigers. Esteban Yan (2-3) allowed an unearned run on three hits over two innings for the victory and Ugueth Urbina pitched a scoreless ninth for his 20th save of the season.
