SAN FRANCISCO, 20 August 2004 — Barry Bonds hit his third home run in two days to help the San Francisco Giants earn a split of their doubleheader with a 14-4 win over the Montreal Expos on Wednesday.
Bonds hit his 34th homer of the season and 692nd of his career after blasting a pair in the Giants 5-4 win on Tuesday night. The home run was the first pitch the 40-year-old Bonds saw to hit in the nightcap. He was walked intentionally his first two times up, giving him 174 walks this season, 92 of them intentional.
Dustan Mohr also homered for the Giants, who had 14 hits. Marquis Grissom had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Giants.
Wayne Franklin (2-0) allowed one run on three hits over six innings to pick up the win.
T.J. Tucker (3-2) took the loss for Montreal, allowing six runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Tony Batista had two hits and drove in a run for the Expos, who trailed 11-1 after just five innings. Jose Vidro homered and drove in three runs to lead the Expos to a 6-2 win in the first game.
In other games, Carlos Beltran’s two-run double drove in the winning runs in the eighth inning, lifting the Houston Astros to a 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Roger Clemens left the game after straining his right calf running to first base on a fourth inning single and is listed as day-to-day.
In St. Louis, Sean Casey drove in three runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals. Rookie Josh Hancock (3-1) got the win, allowing two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Corey Patterson hit a two-run home run in the 11th inning, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 7-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pinch-hitter Lenny Harris belted a three-run double off Eric Gagne in the top of the ninth inning as the Florida Marlins stunned the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4.
In Phoenix, Casey Fossum pitched seven strong innings, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Fossum (3-12) scattered seven hits over seven innings to win for the first time since July 1.
Andruw Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, leading the Atlanta braves to a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres. Jones and Julio Franco had three hits each for the Braves.
The scheduled game between the New York Mets and the Colorado Rockies in Denver was postponed due to rain.
Santana Solid on the Mound as Twins Trounce Yankees
Johan Santana pitched seven strong innings to win his fifth straight start and Shannon Stewart homered, had three hits and two RBI to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-2 home win over the New York Yankees.
The Twins have out-scored the Yankees 15-4 in taking the first two games of the three-game series between the division leaders.
Santana (13-6) allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk after carrying a shutout into the eighth inning. Grant Balfour and Joe Nathan finished up.
In other games, Tim Wakefield pitched eight strong innings as the Boston Red Sox stayed hot with a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Wakefield (9-7) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk before Keith Foulke allowed two runs on four hits in the ninth to finish up.
In St. Petersburg, Bartolo Colon pitched 8 2/3 strong innings to lead the Anaheim Angels past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4.
Colon (12-9) allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks to win for the seventh time in his last eight starts. John Buck hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth as the Kansas City Royals edged the Seattle Mariners 3-2. D.J. Carrasco (2-1) pitched two perfect innings of relief for the win.
In Baltimore, Erubiel Durazo hit three home runs and drove in all five of Oakland’s runs as the Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4. Durazo’s homers ignited a comeback from a 4-0 deficit and gave Mark Mulder (16-4) the win.
Aaron Rowland homered twice to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 9-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Jose Contreras (11-5) allowed two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings for the win.
In Arlington, Hank Blalock hit two home runs as the Texas Rangers beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2. Kenny Rogers (15-5) got the win, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings.
