NEW YORK, 22 August 2004 — Ramon Ortiz pitched eight shutout innings as Adam Kennedy and Garret Anderson homered to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 5-0 road win over the New York Yankees in the American League on Friday.
The Angels won their third straight game to stay in the thick of the race for both the AL West title and the wild card. Anaheim has also won eight of its past nine road games.
The AL East leading Yankees lost for the third time in four attempts after rallying to beat the Minnesota Twins 13-10 on Thursday and salvage the final game of their three-game series.
The Yankees lead in the AL East was cut to 7 1/2 games over the Boston Red Sox, who beat the Chicago White Sox.
In other games, Curt Schilling allowed three hits over seven shutout innings to help Boston beat Chicago 10-1.Schilling (15-6) struck out six and walked none.
In Detroit, Craig Munroe homered and had four hits as the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 8-3. Brandon Inge, Bobby Higginson and Jason Smith all drove in two runs for the Tigers.
Eric Chavez hit a pair of homers as the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-5.
In Minneapolis, Kyle Lohse pitched seven solid innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 5-1 win over the fading Cleveland Indians. Lohse (6-10) allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
In Baltimore, Chris Woodward hit a grand slam and Eric Hinske added a three-run shot, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 14-4 rout over the Baltimore Orioles.
Orlando Hudson had three hits and drove in two runs for the Jays, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
Cubs Blast Six Homers in Astros Mauling
Mark Grudzielanek hit two of Chicago’s six home runs and Glendon Rusch pitched seven strong innings to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 9-2 pasting of the Astros in Houston on Friday.
Sammy Sosa also homered for the Cubs, his 28th of the season and 567th of his career, moving him to within six of Harmon Killebrew for seventh place on the all-time list.
Sosa also tied Mickey Mantle for 40th place on the all-time RBI list with 1,509.
Nomar Gaciaparra, Corey Patterson and Moises Alou also homered for the Cubs, as the Astros tied a club record for most home runs allowed in a single game.
In other games, Jim Thome and Bobby Abreu both homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
In St. Louis, Dan Haren pitched 6 2/3 solid innings, leading the Cardinals to a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader. Haren (2-2) was returned to Triple-A Memphis after the game, but allowed one run on three hits for the win.
In the nightcap, Chris Carpenter pitched seven strong innings and Scott Rolen became the third Cardinal to reach 30 homers this season as the Cards completed the sweep with a 5-3 win.
In San Diego, Brian Lawrence pitched a complete game five-hitter to lift the Padres to a 6-1 win over the Florida Marlins. Lawrence (12-10) gave up a run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Pedro Feliz hit a pair of home runs, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 7-3 win over the New York Mets.
In Phoenix, Luke Hudson and two relievers combined on a six-hitter as the Cincinnati Reds blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0.
Tony Batista homered and drove in three runs, leading the Montreal Expos to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. Luis Ayala (5-9) struck out four in two hitless innings of relief for the win and Chad Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save.
Adrian Beltre hit his second homer of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Giovanni Carrara (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
