MANAMA, 10 September 2004 — A mysterious explosion seen in Bahraini skies at 2.15 a.m. yesterday caused widespread alarm and an investigation by police. The blue colored silent explosion lighted large areas on the ground and lasted about a minute and a half leaving traces of smoke in its wake.
Panicky public flooded the Batelco phone-number information lines with calls asking for the civil aviation offices’ contacts and a large number of concerned calls were made to the 999 services.
According to sources, police had dispatched units to investigate and search various areas following the numerous reports of the explosion that was seen from the Bahrain International Airport tower. Bahrain Defense Force and US military officials said that they were not aware of any maneuvers or exercises in the area. No details about the origin of the explosion or what caused it were available.
