JAKARTA, 11 September 2004 — A 24-member Saudi business delegation cut short its visit to Indonesia following a huge explosion that shook Jakarta on Thursday. The bombing that targeted the Australian Embassy in Jakarta killed nine people and wounded nearly 200.
The Saudi businessmen from the chambers of commerce and industry in Jeddah and Makkah were led by Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Shalhoub.
Naif Muhammad Noor Jambi, the delegation’s business coordinator, said the team had met with a number of prominent Indonesian officials and businessmen. He said the Saudi Embassy in Jakarta had made arrangements for the protection of the delegation soon after the explosion.
A Saudi Embassy spokesman, meanwhile, confirmed that no member of the delegation was hurt in the bombing. “We are in continuous contact with Indonesian authorities to know whether any Saudis were among the people injured in the incident,” he told Al-Eqtisadiah, a sister publication of Arab News.
