KHAMIS MUSHAYAT, 23 September 2004 — A census employee came to the timely rescue of a man who had divorced his wife just two hours ago, Al-Watan daily reported. The enumerator came to the house to count its residents when he noticed that the man of the house was in a miserable mood. Asked what was wrong, the man said he had a big fight with his wife and in the fit of anger divorced her. He regretted what he did but did not know what to do to undo what he did. The census employee called a sheikh from a local mosque and asked him what the man should do to get his ex-wife back. The sheikh issued a fatwa for a new marriage contract and the presence of two witnesses. The census employee volunteered to become one of the witnesses. To mark the happy ending, the helpful enumerator gave a gift of SR1,000 to the newly remarried couple.
