JEDDAH, 27 September 2004 — The automobile spare parts industry in Jeddah recorded business worth an estimated SR200 million last year despite stiff competition from dealers of used spare parts.

Sales of used spare parts increased by 65 percent over those of genuine spares, which forced many dealers to offer huge discounts to their dealers and distributors.

Car dealers and major car companies are coordinating with the chamber of commerce and industry to put an end to the growing business of used spare parts and fake parts. Lately, many used spare parts shops have sprung up outside the city or in the industrial city.

Widespread use of used parts and fake parts has caused an increase in the number of car accidents. In Jeddah alone last year, there were more than 63,000 car accidents, claiming 310 lives and resulting in 3,657 serious injuries.
