RIYADH, 9 October 2004 – The Health Department in Riyadh has warned doctors and other employees working in government and private hospitals against using camera-fitted cell phones in order to protect people’s right to privacy.
Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Dhakeel, director of health affairs in Riyadh, said that violators would be punished with pay cut or other means. If such cell phones are found on hospital premises, government authorities would be notified for their seizure. Hospitals by themselves cannot seize it, he added.
Dhakeel said no hospital has yet reported seizure of camera–equipped cell phones that could be misused to take photos of patients or harass visitors.
