Arab News Junior Cup Final Today

RIYADH, 14 October 2004 — The under-15 cricket championship tournament for Arab News Junior Cup will be held here today, bringing to a close the month-long knockout series in which 18 teams from the capital vied with one other.

The finals will be played at the RCA grounds 1 & 2 at Al-Sulay, left of exit 18, Nasir Khan, vice president of Riyadh Cricket Association, told newsmen yesterday.

The announcement was made on the occasion of the annual prize distribution of RCA in the presence of Brig. Gen. Prince Abdul Aziz ibn Nasser ibn Abdul Aziz, patron-in-chief, and renowned cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan. Abdul Qadeer Mirza, president of RCA, and Dr. Tareq Javed, senior adviser to the governor of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and past president of the association, were present at the function that attracted a large gathering. One of the highlights of the event is the creation of the Yahoo Group in which RCA will upload all the photographs and scoresheets of the championship series.

Sri Lankan International School and Manarat Al-Riyadh will face off in the under-17 championship, while Jawaher Al Riyadh International School will be pitted against International Indian School Riyadh in the under-15 championship. In all, 212 players from different nationalities participated in the two groups. Of the 18 pool matches, six were for the under-15 group and 12 for the under-17.

“The credit goes to RCA for bringing their cricketing skills to the fore through this mega event, “ Nasir said, adding that the players came from the cricketing countries — Australia, Bangladesh, Britain, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
