Raptors Beat Pistons, Suns Top Sixers

TORONTO, 7 November 2004 — Chris Bosh netted 18 points and Loren Woods compiled 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as Toronto put together a 101-89 victory over Detroit at the Air Canada Center.

All five Raptor starters finished in double-figures as Toronto (2-0) recorded its second straight home triumph to begin the 2004-05 campaign. Rafer Alston hit 3-of-5 three-point attempts in a 13-point effort, while Vince Carter added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton each poured in 24 points for the defending World Champion Pistons (1-1), who opened the season Tuesday with a 87-79 win over Houston. Ben Wallace nearly racked up a triple-double in defeat, ending with 10 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Detroit head coach Larry Brown was not in attendance, as the 64-year-old is recovering from recent hip surgery which will keep him away for at least one week. Assistant coach Gar Heard ran the club in Brown’s absence.

Jalen Rose contributed 11 points for the Raptors, while Peterson also had 11 in 21 minutes off the bench.

At Philadelphia, Amare Stoudemire scored 29 points with 10 rebounds, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 108-98 victory over Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center.

Shawn Marion added 24 points and 11 boards and Joe Johnson scored 22 for the Suns, who opened their season with a 30-point win over Atlanta at home on Wednesday night.

Allen Iverson’s 25 points and nine assists led the Sixers, who stumbled to a loss after coming from behind to beat Boston in their opener on Wednesday. Iverson made just six of his 20 shots and turned the ball over seven times.

At Boston, Austin Croshere scored seven of his 16 points during a crucial stretch in the fourth quarter, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 100-94 win over the Boston Celtics at the Fleet Center. Ron Artest tallied a game-high 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Pacers, who have won both of their contests this season.

At New Orleans, Steve Francis’ tip-in with 2.7 seconds left on the clock lifted Orlando to a 90-89 road victory over New Orleans.

Francis finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Hedo Turkoglu poured in 21 points in 16 minutes off the bench to lead the Magic (2-0) to their second straight last-second win in as many games.

At Chicago, Richard Jefferson scored 26 points, grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds and handed out nine assists, as New Jersey held off Chicago in double overtime, 111-106, at the United Center.

Alonzo Mourning added 17 points and Jason Collins chipped in 16 for the Nets, who improved to 1-1 after opening their season with a 100-77 loss to Miami.

At Oakland, Keith McLeod posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Utah Jazz to a 102-80 victory over Golden State at The Arena.

Carlos Boozer added 16 points and nine rebounds and Andrei Kirilenko scored 14 for the Jazz, who opened their season with a convincing 26-point win over the Lakers on Wednesday. At Memphis, Tracy McGrady finished with 30 points and nine assists to lead Houston to an 89-81 win over Memphis in the first game for both teams in new Southwest Division at FedExForum.

Jim Jackson contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for the Rockets, who posted their first win of the season after opening with consecutive losses. At Portland, Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Portland to an easy 94-81 win over the Los Angeles Clippers at the Rose Garden.

Derek Anderson had 16 points and Zach Randolph contributed 14 points and 14 boards for the Trail Blazers, who are 2-0 this season after opening their season with a 78-75 win in Golden State.

At Seattle, Ray Allen shot 10-of-16 for 25 points, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a 106-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in their home opener at KeyArena. Rashard Lewis posted 23 points and Antonio Daniels added 12 to help Seattle to its seventh straight home-opening win. Reggie Evans collected 11 points and nine rebounds. Lewis also had half of his team’s 10 blocks for a new career high.

At Los Angeles, Tim Duncan had 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs past the Los Angeles Lakers, 105-96.

Manu Ginobili added 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Spurs, who won for the second time in as many games on the young season.
