JEDDAH, 9 November 2004 — Patrol police have arrested members of a gang in Riyadh’s Al-Mursalat neighborhood for robbing the public of their money and valuables after disguising themselves as security personnel, Al-Madinah reported yesterday quoting Brig. Mansour Al-Turki, spokesman of the Interior Ministry.
The gang members stopped vehicles at random “checkpoints” they set up on highway exits in Riyadh and asked drivers and their passengers to produce their IDs as well as money and mobile phones for inspection. “Police besieged the gang in Al-Mursalat district while they were traveling in a car and arrested them,” Brig. Al-Turki said.
He said the arrest took place in a record time. He cautioned the public against such criminals and asked them not give their money and valuables to them.
In a related development, security forces arrested a wanted criminal after storming his house. The man, believed to be a Yemeni, earlier refused to surrender and used women as shields, the paper said.
