MANAMA, 20 November 2004 — A jailed human rights activist, who is on hunger strike to press for the release of 13 people who were arrested last month during demonstrations in his support, was briefly hospitalized Thursday after collapsing in prison from weakness.

Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawajah, executive director of the now-dissolved Bahrain Center for Human Rights, collapsed and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, Khadija Al-Mousawi told the Associated Press.

She said she received a call from prison authorities to inform her about his condition. She said he suffered from low blood pressure. Al-Khawajah, who began the hunger strike Sunday, was later returned to prison.
