DAMMAM, 3 December 2004 — One elementary student was killed and three were injured when a heavy school door fell on them, Al-Eqtisadiah reported. The 11-year-old student was killed outside Al-Madinah Elementary School, located in the Ohod neighborhood east of Dammam.
A special team from the fire department, police and Ministry of Education immediately began an investigation. The student died moments after the door fell on him and before the ambulance arrived. The dead student suffered from severe head injuries, which caused bleeding in the brain. Other students injured were transported to hospital by their parents.
The manager of education in the Eastern Province confirmed that one of the students died immediately while others were transported to hospital and reported their condition as stable.
The death of the students has generated an angry reaction from parents at the school. They blame the accident on neglect and lack of maintenance by the school to the fabric of the building.
Police ruled out the possibility of criminal cause and also blame it on school negligence. According to the manager, the school was recently opened two years ago and he offered his condolences to the family of the dead student.
The governor of the Eastern Province offered his condolences to the dead family and ordered proper authority to find those responsible for the accident.
