MUSCAT, 10 January 2005 — Those wanting to dial mobile telephone numbers in Oman will have to prefix 9 to existing numbers.

Dr. Amir ibn Awad Al-Rowas, managing director of the newly-created Oman Mobile, said the modification, effective from yesterday, was meant to facilitate the growing mobile telephone traffic for the benefit of subscribers whose number has crossed 840,000.

“The plan involves the addition of a new digit 9 to the number starting with 9 and replacing prepaid Hayak number staring with 72 by 92,” he said. “We want to make mobile telephone facility as smoothly accessible as possible in the face of an ever-increasing demand,” he added.

He said the company will start providing roaming facility for Hayak service to the UAE on a trial basis on Feb. 7. A majority of landline telephone numbers have also been modified with the addition of 24 at the beginning.
