DHAKA, 17 January 2005 — A number of bureaucrats in Bangladesh are taking higher degrees from unauthorized campuses of foreign private universities to advance their careers, Education Ministry and University Grants Commission officials said in Dhaka yesterday.
The commission in the past three months rejected certificates of master degree courses, which six bureaucrats received from the foreign university campuses and submitted them to the commission for approval.
The commission earlier blacklisted all campuses of foreign universities and institutions in Bangladesh as they were set up and run without the permission of the ministry or the commission.
The commission officials said certificates of a joint secretary and a deputy secretary of two ministries, a director general of a department under the Planning Ministry, an additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka and two other bureaucrats were recently rejected.
The officials said the bureaucrats, for advantage in promotion, tried to use the degrees, especially master’s in business administration, they had collected from the universities declared illegal by the commission.
