JEDDAH, 19 January 2005 — Jeddah will soon witness a new stunt show. A number of professional rock climbers will perform their daredevil act as part of this year’s Eid festivities. The climbers will begin their one week run in front of Le Mall on Tahiliyah Street from Jan.19 — Feb.10.

“The show is the first of its kind to be held in the Kingdom and we are hoping that residents and visitors to Jeddah during Haj will experience the excitement and challenge of rock climbing,” said Nada Al-Attas, managing director of the company organizing the event.

She pointed out that a wall is being built which is approximately 5 meters wide and 12 meters high and includes built-in safety measures. She went on to explain that the show would be repeated three times daily for a week.

She also said that spectators would have the opportunity to climb the wall while being supervised by the stunt men.

“Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is perfect for community activities and festivals. We are very happy to bring this sport to the public in the Kingdom and hope that they will enjoy its thrills and excitement.” Nouf Al-Zouidi, event manager, described the event as “an attempt to promote the sport and bring some excitement to the city during the Eid holidays.”

She added that the event was not competitive and that it took place to the sound of loud music. “It is a social event rather than a competition,” she explained.
