All Systems Go for First Autocross Event in Jeddah

JEDDAH, 22 January 2005 — It’s all systems go for the first Autocross in the Kingdom (Saudi Star) as qualified drivers from outside Jeddah started to hit town for the big event Jan. 27-28 here.

The final round of the first ever autocross organized in the Kingdom will be staged on a race track behind the Ice Land Center on Prince Sultan street.

A group of special engineers has designed the track made all the more challenging with a slew of curves and hairpin turns.

To pit driving skills are the 22 finalists — eight each from Jeddah and Alkhobar and six from Riyadh. Many of them are now deep in technical preparation for the races organized by Bakshahab Co. Ltd. And sponsored by Citroen and Bison energy drink.

The Riyadh hopefuls conducted an elimination race dubbed “Speed Trip” among themselves, according to organizer Meshaal Al Sudeiri. Khobar champion Mansour Al Khattani is looking forward to the two-day races and praised the organizers for their great efforts in putting together an event of this magnitude.

Organizers said they have built stands inside the track for the big crowd expected to watch the races which will determine the top driver to be proclaimed Saudi Star.

To drum up interest they suggested to include the races as part of Haj vacation program.
