Ever since the government announced that elections would be held, our society has been abuzz.

All kinds of theories have been offered. Some were skeptical and maintained that elections would never take place; others doubted the public would heed the call to vote, and many more doubting Thomases offered their two cents worth.

Even when voter registration began and candidates started announcing their platforms, these people didn’t get any sense of excitement that we are entering a new era in our political life.

Election day came, and the people went to the polls. Admittedly, they were few in number with no women among them, but the fact that people came, queued up and cast their ballots is an indication that Saudi society is on the move.

This was an exhibition of political maturity by people who believed it was time to take part in the decision-making process that affects all our lives.

They didn’t want to be mere bystanders but travelers on the road of life and progress. They wanted to be participants rather than spectators. Their actions were in tune with the reform pace and the dialogue method being initiated by the government.

One could hear discussions concerning the state of our society, plans for the future and issues of vital concern to all. These were being discussed openly, frankly and without fear.

These are signs of a healthy society. Different viewpoints were expressed. I was amazed that, by and large, people are beginning to accept opposing viewpoints. Yes, there are those who remain rigid and intolerant. They will always be there. However, we hope that as time passes they will learn that for a society to be conflict-free, not only tolerance but acceptance of others’ perspectives is a must. Therefore, it is of great importance that we not be cynical or skeptical of the composition of the members of the council. True, 50 percent are nominated. However, we hope that number will be reduced in the next elections, and elected officials will look into people’s needs concerning social services. Those nominated also should be apprised that they should not become bureaucrats. They are there to review situations and come up with solutions. They are there as the guardians of public interest. The media always should remind them that. The role of the media should not be underestimated. They should educate the public on the importance of this balloting, encourage voter registration and casting ballots on election day.

All of us — men and women — should create an atmosphere of participation. We should even take our young sons and daughters on election day and teach them the importance of being involved in societal development.

Unfortunately, many of us enjoy sitting on the sidelines and criticizing, and no course of action ever will please them. The time has come to be involved in our neighborhoods, in our institutions and in our futures. It is time to start now. The elections give us this opportunity, and it is an opportunity that we cannot afford to squander.

As the Chinese say, “Do not curse the darkness; light up a candle”.
