The 15th Asian Games are set to take place from Dec. 1-15, 2006 in Doha, Qatar. The Asian Games will feature more than 45 countries participating in over 40 sporting events. More than 30 sports facilities will accommodate the athletes’ requirements — 14 multipurpose stadiums are already scattered around Doha and are being refurbished to meet the demand.
Fifteen thousand volunteers will be needed to lend a hand in the management of the largest sporting event ever held in the GCC. Depending on their skills, some volunteers will be given tasks that require special qualifications while others will be trained to deliver excellent customer service. The responsibilities include hospitality support, communications, press operations, public information, ticketing, venue staffing, spectator services and security, among others.
Currently, the organizers of the games are attempting to recruit as many volunteers as possible from Qatar to fill the available positions. However, volunteer applications are being accepted from residents and nationals of other GCC countries and the organizers will turn to those individuals if need be. The volunteer application is at the website.
The official website, www.doha-2006.com, is already counting down the time to the event. Currently there are 647 days till the opening ceremony. The website is an unbeatable resource for information on the organization behind the games, the events, participants, news and Qatar.
Orry, a Qatari Oryx, has been chosen as the mascot for the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006. Orry invites everyone to visit the website and download wallpaper or a screensaver or send an e-card. Qatar is hoping that everyone will join in so we can all enjoy this amazing event together and remember it for the rest of our lives.
