Tanglaw Club Dominates Toastmasters Area 11 Contest

JEDDAH, 2 March 2005 — Tanglaw Toastmasters Club of Jeddah dominated the Area 11 speech competition held at Al-Hamra Sofitel Hotel recently, winning three of four categories.

The first winner was Ayman Al-Harbi, whose “Thing Kids Do” entry got the nod of the judges in the Humorous Speech category.

Topping the prestigious International Speech Category was Henry Cabansag, whose touching entry “A Father’s Love” won Tanglaw its second trophy.

Umar Abdul Salam captured the third trophy by winning in Table Topics, in which a contestant is made to deliver an impromptu discourse on a certain topic for two minutes.

Rounding up the champions’ corner was Sameer Hamadeh of ALJ Toastmasters Club, who topped the Evaluation category, in which contestants comment on a prepared speech delivered by a designated speaker.

Two more Tanglaw members scooped second place trophies: Willy Araza in Evaluation and Marah Fuentes in Table Topics. Al-Harbi also placed second in International Speech, winning a 6th trophy for the club.

The other winners were: Muhammad Fawzi and Nazer Melethil of PACE Toastmasters Club, 2nd and 3rd placers respectively in Humorous Speech; Salman Elahi, PACE, 3rd place in Evaluation; Muhammad Arshad Masood, ALJ, 3rd place in Table Topics; and Ameer Hamza Sheikh, PACE, 3rd place, International Speech.

Area Governor Mustafa Ay said the event was made possible with the sponsorship of Abdul Lateef Jamil Group, mother group of ALJ Toastmasters, one of the four clubs comprising Area 11. The other clubs are Tanglaw, PACE and the Yanbu-based Al-Sharm Toastmasters Club.

Mustafa said the first and second place winners from each category will represent Area 11 in the Division contest on April 8, to be held also at the Al-Hamra Sofitel Hotel in Jeddah.

In the Division contest, Area 11 winners will fight it out with representatives of Area 24 and another group from Riyadh. Area 24 was created out of Area 11 and it is composed of PSME, HOPE, and Jeddah Toastmasters Club. Winners in the Division contest will compete in the Gulf District contest in Amman, Jordan, on May 12-13.
