AMU Honors Iranian Speaker

ALIGARH, 3 March 2005 — India-Iran relations are set to blossom further and are essential for securing peace and stability in the region, Majlis (parliament) Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel said here yesterday.

Adel was speaking at a ceremony here at which he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Aligarh Muslim University here for his outstanding scholarship and humanist vision.

Adel, an outstanding scholar, philosopher and linguist, is in India as the head of an Iranian parliamentary delegation. The visit is at the invitation of Parliament Speaker Somanth Chatterjee.

Commending the AMU for its pluralistic culture and diverse contributions in the filed of learning, Adel said: “AMU shows the resolve and determination of the Muslims of this subcontinent to acquire knowledge. Its department of Persian enjoys high esteem in Iran.

The AMU also presented an honorary doctorate to Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh for “his commitment and courage” to uphold secular values.
