JEDDAH, 18 March 2005 — The relocation of the livestock market across Makkah-Madinah Expressway has been put on hold pending review by a civic committee.

New Mayor Adel Faqeeh in his first decision since his appointment stopped the plan to move the livestock market. The temporary ban will continue until a specialized committee is formed to resolve the matter. The committee, comprising members from various sectors, will report on the best way to move the market.

The owner of the new site for the market in Al-Qumra district will in the meantime complete construction of the pavement of streets that lead to the market’s main entrance. Additionally, the rents of the cages and barns that are as high as SR18,000 a year would be reviewed.

Another obstacle noticed is the leakage of sewage water from the factories situated behind the new site of the market. There is also the need to disinfect the new location.

The environmental report prepared by the new market owner is yet to be approved by the department concerned.
