MANAMA: Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa held talks in Manama on Thursday with the UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, on the situation in the region and the ties between their countries.

Starmer’s visit came amid regional efforts to ensure the Strait of Hormuz is open to international shipping following the announcement on Wednesday of a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran.

The two leaders highlighted the strength of the longstanding partnership between their countries, and discussed opportunities for the expansion of cooperation in the political, security, defense and economic sectors, the Bahrain News Agency reported

They also reviewed the latest regional and international developments, particularly in light of the recent tensions in the Middle East and the effects they have had on international security and the global economy.

Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa held separate talks with Starmer at Sakhir Palace, during which he also emphasized the depth of the strategic relationship between their countries, and Bahrain’s commitment to the further enhancement of cooperation.

He also praised the UK for the role it plays in supporting regional and international security, while stressing the need for Iran to cease its hostile actions and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

Starmer commended Bahrain for its efforts to promote regional stability, and welcomed Wednesday’s ceasefire agreement, describing it as important for regional and global security.

Starmer arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for the start of an official trip to meet Gulf leaders. Before traveling on to Bahrain he made a stop in the UAE on Thursday.
