MANAMA, 25 March 2005 — Two of the Philippines’ most sought-after performing artists will spend a night on the Pearl of the Gulf, dishing out well-loved standards and recent chart-toppers accompanied by a fellow performer whose good looks compliments his raw talent.
Singing champions’ Sheryn Regis and Frenchie Dy, together with Troy Montero will perform in a concert for a cause dubbed “The Champions and The Hunk” today at the Diplomat Hotel.
Regis and Dy are both products of the phenomenal singing competition in the Philippines — ABS-CBN’s Star In A Million (SIAM).
Regis was runner-up in SIAM’s Season One, losing only by a slim margin to her contemporary and yet she was blessed enough to be given ample exposure which catapulted her to her present status now — one of the country’s in-demand performers with a couple of recording hits tucked under her belt.
Sheryn was lucky to represent the country in the prestigious singing competition held in Kazakhstan Russia, where she bagged the 2nd Prize.
Her winning piece is the inspirational song “Follow Your Dream” written by acclaimed songwriter Vehnee Saturno.
Dy, on the other hand was SIAM’s Season Two champion, bagging the coveted title after a powerful rendition of the song “Raindrops Will Fall.”
Nicknamed ‘big-time belter’ — literally and figuratively — Dy charmed her way to the audience’s and the judges hearts with her deep and powerful renditions of her competition songs.
Having a deep passion for singing but was always put off because of her weight, Dy mustered enough courage to take criticisms in stride and went on to join SIAM.
“I was really scared,” says Frenchie.
“It was my friends and my mom who finally convinced me to go ahead. It was really a challenge to prove that even if I’m fat, I have the talent and that’s what’s important.”
In the company of the champions is Montero, a well-rounded performer whose talent is sometimes overlooked because of his good looks.
Tanned and possessing a well-buffed body, the lone hunk in the trio is also a singer in his own right. Montero has been figuring in regular gigs in some of the Philippines’ famous night spots like Ratsky’s.
In an interview with Arab News, event organizer Weng Paniza said, “Regis, Dy and Montero will serenade Bahrain with their respective takes on music in a concert which aims to raise funds to supplement the ongoing relief operation for the tsunami victims and survivors.”
The concert is presented by Power Horse Energy Drink and is sponsored by Enigma Bar of Windsor Tower Hotel, House of Travel, Al Safir Hotel, Qatar Airways and Triskelion International-Bahrain.
Gate opens at 6 p.m. with the concert starting promptly at 8 p.m.
Tickets are priced at BD5 and BD10. Weng Paniza could be reached at +973-3-9082133.
