RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has the full support of Gulf states in protecting its security and sovereignty after attacks launched by Iran-backed militias in Iraq, the head of the GCC said on Wednesday.
"These hostile acts represent a dangerous escalation, a flagrant violation of the Kingdom's sovereignty, and a direct threat to its security and stability, as well as to regional peace and security," GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi said.
Albudaiwi's comments were echoed by other leaders in the region after Saudi Arabia carried out joint airstrikes with the US against the militias in Iraq early on Wednesday. The strikes came after the Iran-backed groups had targeted oil infrastructure in the Kingdom with explosive drones over the last two days.
Kuwait denounced the attacks on Saudi Arabia and said the attacks by the Iraqi groups “reflect the determination of those militias to persist in escalation and undermine the security and stability of the region.”
Bahrain also offered its support for Saudi Arabia, saying the Kingdom has every right “to respond to any aggression and deter aggressors.”
Egypt also condemned the targeting of oil facilities in the Kingdom and the militia's attacks on Jordan.
The Muslim World League (MWL) Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa said the "criminal attacks" violated all religious values and international and humanitarian laws.
He said the MWL offered full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in deterring aggressors, safeguarding its security and sovereignty, and ensuring the safety of its citizens and residents.
Saudi Arabia's defense ministry said the strikes were in line with the Kingdom’s right to self-defense.
The US Embassy in Baghdad also issued a statement advising US citizens in Iraq to maintain “the highest level of vigilance, monitor local media, and comply with instructions from local authorities.”
It said travel disruptions or airspace closures may occur without prior notice.
