GENEVA, 30 April 2005 — Italy’s Damiano Cunego showed he is in form for the Giro d’Italia by winning the tough 146-km third stage of the Tour de Romandie yesterday.
Cunego beat Russia’s Denis Menchov and Santiago Botero of Colombia at the summit of the 13km climb to the finish in the ski resort of Anzere to seal his first victory of the season. Thanks to setting a faster time in the prologue time trial stage on Monday, Botero took the overall lead in the six-day race. Cunego is second, two seconds behind, with Menchov third at 10 seconds.
“Winning boosts my moral and helps me stay relaxed. Now I’m ready for the Giro,” Cunego said.
