RIYADH, 16 May 2005 — Prince Sultan ibn Salman, secretary-general of the Supreme Commission for Tourism (SCT), highlighted yesterday the role played by SCT in the development of tourism in the Kingdom.
Addressing a meeting of the Tourism Event and Activity Organization attended by representatives of the travel and tourism industry, Prince Sultan expressed his gratitude for those responsible for the development of various tourism products.
“The government sector also plays a vital role in the development of tourism in the Kingdom and I thank Prince Miteb, minister of municipal and rural affairs, for his support,” Prince Sultan said.
Abdul Rahman Al-Jeraisy, president of the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said tourism is a very important sector, representing sociological, intellectual and cultural aspects of life.
He noted that tourism has been playing a vital role in the Kingdom’s economic development and the creation of the SCT has been beneficial since it generated a lot of tourism activities.
He noted that the many tourist attractions all over the Kingdom could be further developed and improved to promote domestic tourism and attract foreign visitors. “The SCT has been doing exactly this. The diversified topography and rich cultural heritage, religious and historic sites and modern infrastructure helped promote tourism in the Kingdom,” he said.
A workshop was held on development of package trips to various tourist destinations in the Kingdom, generation of revenues from tourist activities, holding of tourism events and projecting the Kingdom as a tourist destination, among others.
