JEDDAH, 22 May 2005 — More than 20 Saudis are among over 400 business women attending the three-day “Women in Business International Forum,” which ends in Damascus today.
The conference has the support of Syria’s first lady Asma Al-Assad and is jointly organized by Women in Business International (WiB), MAWRED, the British Syrian Society and Eligo International.
“Syrian women have historically pioneered the active role of Arab women in all aspects of society. Today, whether in politics, government, business or social affairs, their role is well established and increasingly ever more prominent,” Asma said in her message.
“This progressive position has been further enhanced by the protection of women’s rights as enshrined in the policies of successive governments in Syria. I believe that the many international businesswomen attending the conference from across the globe will be able to experience at first hand the dynamism of women in Syria as well as experience at first hand the many trade and investment opportunities available to them,” she added.
“Misconceptions and stereotypes abound in the media about Arab women and the value given to them in Arab society. We’ve endeavored for over eight years to open the world’s eyes to the reality of the situation. The event will bury many of these prejudices as delegates will see a vibrant and dedicated business and professional community of women in Syria that have over the years had the equality of opportunity to participate in all aspects of Syrian society. The interest that we’ve received in Syria from those wishing to speak and attend the Forum shows the level of respect and esteem that the event in Damascus is held in,” said Ahmed Suleiman, founder of Women in Business International.
