Storms Kill 21 in Bangladesh

DHAKA, 24 May 2005 — Storms lashed Bangladesh with lightning and rains, killing at least 21 people, injuring more than 1,000 others and leveling about 1,000 homes, news reports said yesterday.

The dead were all struck by lightning, while the injured were hit by falling trees and the debris of flimsy huts that collapsed during the storms on Sunday, reports said.

Eight villagers died while harvesting rice Sunday on their farms in Cox’s Bazar district, 300 km south of Dhaka. A mother and her teenage son died after lighting struck their home in neighboring Patuakhali district. Six people died in eastern Laxmipur district and another man was killed near Dhaka, the dailies said. Four more died in eastern parts of the country.
