TORONTO, 24 May 2005 — Hideki Matsui delivered a two-run single to spark an eighth inning rally as the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 5-3 at Shea Stadium on Sunday to take their Interleague Subway Series 2-1.
Trailing 2-1, the Yankees capitalized on two errors and some timely hitting in the eighth as Matsui singled to left scoring Tony Womack and Derek Jeter, who did not start because of a sore elbow but came on as a pinch-runner for Ruben Sierra.
Bernie Williams then completed the rally with a line drive double to right center scoring Matsui from first with the go ahead run.
Womack tagged on an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth.
Carl Pavano (4-2) earned the win with seven innings of gritty work, allowing three runs — one earned — on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Mariano Rivera retired the final three batters for his ninth save.
In Baltimore, Pat Burrell cracked a three-run homer and Mike Lieberthal had a solo shot while Corey Lidle tossed a complete game to help the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-2 win over the Orioles. Lidle (4-3) was brilliant on the mound allowing two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one to notch the complete game win.
In Miami, Juan Encarnacion and Juan Pierre each drove in a pair of RBIs to key a seven run seventh inning as the Florida Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with an 8-5 win.
In Toronto, Tony Blanco belted a three-run homer and Tomo Ohka delivered eight solid innings as the Washington Nationals crushed the Blue Jays 9-2.
Getting the start for injured John Patterson, Ohka (3-3) allowed two runs on five hits striking out two and walking one.
In Seattle, Aaron Sele pitched a four-hit shutout and Jeremy Reed had three hits and a pair of RBIs as the Mariners blanked the San Diego Padres 5-0. Sele (3-4) was dominant, retiring 13 of the last 14 batters he faced, striking out three and walking one to collect his ninth career shutout.
In Los Angeles, Ricky Ledee and Jason Phillips had solo home runs and Derek Lowe tossed seven strong innings as the Dodgers downed the Angels 6-2.
In Kansas City, Ryan Jenson claimed his first win in three years and John Buck had a two-run homer to key a six-run first inning as the Royals rolled to a 9-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
In Arlington, Chan Ho Park tossed seven scoreless innings and Mark Teixeira homered as the Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 2-0 win.
In Minneapolis, Lew Ford scored the winning run on error by Junior Spivey in the 11th inning, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
In Boston, Matt Clement tossed a complete game four-hitter and Manny Ramirez stroked a two-run homer as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-2.
In Cincinnati, Casey Blake drove in three runs and Josh Bard and Grady Sizemore each contributed a pair of RBIs as the Cleveland Indians crushed the Reds 9-2.
In Chicago, Mark Prior pitched a complete game and Jason Dubois smacked a three-run homer to power the Cubs to a 4-3 win over the White Sox.
In San Francisco, Moises Alou went two-for-four with a two-run homer, leading the Giants to 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics. Noah Lowry (2-5) secured the win allowing just one run on seven hits.
In Detroit, Javier Vazquez pitched a five-hit shutout and Craig Counsell’s eight inning RBI single accounted for the game’s only run as the Arizona Diamondbacks shutout the Tigers 1-0.
Kennedy in Command as Rockies Edge Pirates
In Toronto, Joe Kennedy pitched 8 1/3 sharp innings and Desi Relaford drove in a pair of runs as the Colorado Rockies edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 at PNC Park in the only National League game on Sunday.
Kennedy (3-4) allowed just three runs — two earned — on five hits while striking out six and walking two.
Brian Fuentes came on in the ninth to get the final two outs and his second save of the season. Josh Fogg (3-3) absorbed the loss giving up four runs — three earned — on five hits in five innings.
Trailing 1-0, the Rockies scored a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to surge 4-1 in front.
The Pirates rallied in the ninth, Jose Castillo driving in a run and scoring another but the comeback stalled when David Ross popped up to end the threat.
