DHAKA, 8 June 2005 — A woman was killed and four people were injured when a Bangladeshi fighter plane crashed into homes on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka yesterday, officials said.

The woman whose house was hit by the debris was killed and four of her children were injured, police said. Witnesses said five people were initially injured in the crash. One of the injured, the 40-year-old woman, Roushanara, died in hospital later.

The injured, who were in the house belonging to Humayun, who lives in Saudi Arabia, were taken to nearby IC Hospital, where Roushanara died.

“The pilot ejected himself unhurt when the Chinese-made fighter F-7 crashed near Dhaka international airport,” an armed forces spokesman said.

Flaming wreckage sparked a fire that burned six semi-concrete and tin homes, a fire service official said. The F-7 was on a routine sortie when the accident happened, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government yesterday appointed Maj. Gen. Moeen U. Ahmed as the country’s new army chief for the next three years, a Defense Ministry statement said.
