JEDDAH, 13 June 2005 — The Saudi Ambassador to the World Food Program (WFP), Abdul Aziz Al-Rekban, has noted the Kingdom’s generous contribution to the agency’s program to end child hunger.
In a statement on the occasion of Walk the World 2005, an international fund-raising campaign to fight hunger, Al-Rekban described Saudi Arabia as “a humanitarian Kingdom.”
The ambassador said the Kingdom had often extended humanitarian assistance to WFP in order to alleviate the sufferings of victims of natural calamities around the world.
“The latest example was the aid given to the tsunami victims in Southeast Asian countries,” he told Arab News. “Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian initiatives to deal with various problems have won international acclaim,” he added.
More than 200,000 people made history yesterday in the global fight to end hunger among children by taking part in the Walk the World fund-raising campaign, which included 266 cities in 87 countries.
Walk the World was organized in cooperation with Dutch logistics giant TNT. TNT staff and people working for other international corporations around the world took part in sponsored walks.
