Prior’s Happy Return as Cubs Edge White Sox

CHICAGO, 28 June 2005 — Mark Prior and two relievers combined on a one-hitter as the Chicago Cubs won their cross-city series against the White Sox with a 2-0 victory in Interleague play at US Cellular Field on Sunday.

The Cubs took two of the three games on the road after losing two of three at Wrigley Field to the White Sox in May.

Prior (5-1) was making his first start since May 27 after coming off the disabled list and was brilliant, allowing just a third inning single to Pablo Ozuna while retiring 18 of the 19 batters he faced.

He struck out three and walked none to outduel Jon Garland, who was looking to become the AL’s first 13-game winner.

Jerome Williams came on to pitch two shutout innings of relief before Ryan Dempster got the last three outs for his 11th save. Corey Patterson broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the sixth inning and Todd Walker added a seventh inning sacrifice fly to account for the Chicago runs. Garland (12-3) allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits over 7 1/3 innings to take the loss. He struck out five and walked one.

In other Interleague games, Grady Sizemore had two hits as the Indians beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in Cleveland. Bob Howry (5-2) got one out for the win and Bob Wickman pitched one inning for his 21st save. David Weathers (4-1) pitched one inning, allowing one run on two hits, to take the loss. Jason LaRue homered for the Reds.

In Washington, Orlando Hudson hit two homers and drove in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Nationals 9-5. Justin Speier (1-1) got two outs and allowed one hit for the win. Miguel Batista pitched two innings for his 14th save. Luis Ayala (6-4) pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two to take the loss.

In Atlanta, John Smoltz pitched a complete game as the Braves beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-1. Smoltz (8-5) allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven. Andruw Jones homered for the Braves. Rodrigo Lopez (7-3) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out five to take the loss. Rafael Palmeiro homered for the Orioles.

In Philadelphia, Manny Ramirez hit his 19th career grand slam as the Boston Red Sox beat the Phillies 12-8.

Mike Timlin (2-1) pitched two innings and allowed two hits for the win. Jason Varitek and Mark Bellhorn both homered for the Red Sox. Rheal Cormier (2-2) pitched two innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two to take the loss. Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell both homered for the Phillies.

In Milwaukee, Luis Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs as the Minnesota Twins beat the Brewers 5-2. Kyle Lohse (6-6) pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and striking out three for the win.

In Houston, Morgan Ensberg had two hits and drove in the winning run with a 10th inning single as the Astros beat the Texas Rangers 3-2. Chad Qualls (3-3) pitched one inning and struck out two for the win.

In St. Petersburg, A.J. Burnett pitched a two-hitter as the Florida Marlins beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1-0. Burnett (5-5) walked two and struck out seven. Juan Pierre had two hits for the Marlins.

In Denver, Garrett Atkins had four hits and drove in three runs as the Colorado Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 9-4. Joe Kennedy (4-7) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out six for the win. Dustan Mohr homered for the Rockies.

In Anaheim, Garret Anderson had two hits and drove in three runs as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Dodgers 5-3. Brendan Donnelly (5-2) pitched one inning and struck out two to for the win. Francisco Rodriguez pitched one inning for his 14th save.

In San Diego, Damian Jackson hit two home runs as the Padres beat the Mariners 5-4. Rudy Seanez (4-0) pitched one inning and allowed one hit for the win. Travis Hoffman pitched one inning for his 21st save and Xavier Nady homered for the Padres.

In Oakland, Nick Swisher hit two home runs as the Athletics beat the San Francisco Giants 16-0. Rich Harden (4-3) pitched seven innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three for the win, as the A’s held the Giants to just one hit.

In Phoenix, Shawn Green hit two home runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Detroit Tigers 13-7. Claudio Vargas (2-4) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out eight for the win. Jose Cruz Jr and Tony Clark both homered for the Diamondbacks.

In New York, Jason Giambi drove in the winning runs with a two-run single in the bottom the ninth, leading the Yankees past the Mets 5-4. Mariano Rivera (4-2) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win and Alex Rodriguez had four hits for the Yankees.

Castillo Homers in 10th as Pirates Beat Cardinals 5-4

Jose Castillo hit a game-winning home run in the top of the 10th inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 in the National League in St. Louis Sunday.

Jason Bay homered twice for the Pirates, including a solo shot that tied the game in the top of the ninth and set the stage for extra innings. Bay also added a three-run home run in the third inning for the Pirates, who managed a split of the four-game series while beating the NL Central Division leading Cardinals for only the second time in their past 16 meetings.

The Pirates made the most of just seven hits, three of them from Bay, and scored all their runs on homers to make a winner of reliever John Grabow.

Grabow (2-0), the fourth of five Pittsburgh pitchers, got two outs in relief to get the win and Jose Mesa pitched a nervous 10th for his 19th save of the season.

Yadier Molina homered for the third straight game and had three RBI for the Cardinals, while Reggie Sanders also homered.
