DETROIT, 30 June 2005 — Jermaine Dye hit a tie-breaking home run and Mark Buehrle pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to win his ninth straight decision as the Chicago White Sox edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1 in American League play on Tuesday.
Buehrle (10-1) allowed one run on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks at Comerica Park as the White Sox snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to a major-league best 51-24.
Dye hit his 16th home run of the season to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Scott Podsednik’s sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Juan Uribe, who had tripled, with Chicago’s other run. Cliff Politte relieved Buehrle in the seventh and got four straight outs before Dustin Hermanson survived a ninth inning jam to pick up his 18th save. Tadahito Iguchi and Aaron Rowand both had two hits for the Sox.
Chris Shelton drove in Detroit’s lone run with a second inning single, and Rondell White and Placido Polanco both had two hits for Detroit.
In other AL games, John McDonald singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning, lifting the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersberg.
Miguel Batista (4-0) pitched two innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one for the win. Aaron Hill had three hits and drove in one run for the Blue Jays.
Doug Waechter (3-6) pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three to take the loss. Carl Crawford had two hits for the Devil Rays.
In Baltimore, Brian Roberts hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning as the Orioles beat the New York Yankees 5-4. B.J. Ryan (1-1) pitched two innings and struck out one for the win. Larry Bigbie and Rafael Palmeiro both homered for the Orioles. Mike Stanton (1-2) allowed one run on one hit to take the loss. Robinson Cano and Hideki Matsui both homered for the Yankees.
In Boston, Travis Hafner hit a grand slam as the Cleveland Indians beat the Red Sox 12-8.
Matt Miller (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out one for the win. Aaron Boone homered for the Indians.
Keith Foulke (5-4) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two to take the loss.
In Minneapolis, Justin Morneau homered as the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 11-8.
Jesse Crain (7-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out one for the win. Joe Nathan pitched one inning, for his 20th save.
In Arlington, Garrett Anderson homered as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 in 11 innings. Brendan Donnelly (6-2) pitched one inning and struck out one for the win.
Kameron Loe (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits and walked one to take the loss. Michael Young homered for the Rangers.
In Oakland, Bobby Kielty drove in four runs as the Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 for their fifth straight win. Barry Zito (4-8) allowed one run on six hits over seven innings for the win, striking out two and walking two. Marco Scutaro homered for the A’s. Ichiro Suzuki homered for the Mariners. Jamie Moyer (6-3) allowed seven runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.
Mulder Sharp, Sanders Homers as Cardinals Beat Reds
In St. Louis, Mark Mulder pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and Reggie Sanders hit a two-run homer in the first inning as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 in National League play Tuesday.
Mulder (9-5) allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks coming off his worst outing of the season in his pervious start.
Four relievers completed the eight-hitter for the Cardinals, including Jason Isringhausen, who got the last three outs for his 22nd save as the NL Central leading Cardinals moved 20 games over .500 (48-28).
Sanders’ homer was the only mistake made by Cincinnati starter Brandon Claussen, who went six innings to take the loss. Claussen (4-5) allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk before two relievers completed the four-hitter.
In other NL games, Ryan Drese pitched eight solid innings, as the Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 in Washington.
Drese (6-7) allowed one run on five hits and struck out four. Chad Cordero pitched one inning for his 26th save and Brad Wilkerson had two hits for the Nationals.
Josh Fogg (4-4) pitched six innings, allowing two runs — one earned — on four hits, walking one and striking out two to take the loss. Jason Bay had three hits for the Pirates.
In New York, Mike Piazza homered and drove in three runs as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3. Victor Zambrano (4-6) pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out seven for the win.
In Miami, Marcus Giles homered as the Atlanta Braves beat the Florida Marlins 9-1.
Jorge Sosa (4-1) pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out two for the win. Dontrelle Willis (12-3) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on eleven hits, walking one and striking out three to take the loss. Carlos Delgado homered for the Marlins.
In Chicago, Carlos Zambrano pitched eight strong innings as the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. Zambrano (5-4) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out six. Ryan Dempster pitched one inning for his 12th save.
