JEDDAH, 20 July 2005 — Authorities in Onaizah, Qasim, have asked a young Saudi girl to report to the nearest police station for investigation about phone calls and messages made by her to members of the Shoura Council.

Reports said that a large number of Shoura members complained of receiving a huge amount of phone calls and messages regarding comments made by Dr. Muhammad Al-Zulfa on the issue of women driving that he made a couple of months ago.

Although the issue was closed by the Shoura Council at the time, the young girl thought it was not enough. She decided to keep on condemning the fact that the issue of driving was not discussed and reminding the members — including Council Chairman Dr. Saleh Bin-Humaid — of her disapproval of Dr. Al-Zulfa.

The chairman, along with a number of affected members of the Shoura, expressed their frustration at the huge number of calls they received from the young girl.

The police then asked Saudi Telecom Co. to provide them with a printout of all the young girl’s incoming and outgoing calls. Most of the calls were found directed to the members of the Shoura Council.

In a report carried by Arab News in May, an official speaking for the Shoura Council said that the issue of women driving in the Kingdom would not be discussed in the council. The official stressed that what had been said in the media and on the Internet about the Shoura discussing the topic was “untrue.”
