JEDDAH, 4 August 2005 — The Islamic unity conference, which was scheduled for Aug. 6-8 in Makkah, has been postponed to next February, according to its organizer Dr. Abdullah Al-Turki, secretary-general of the Muslim World League.
He said the international conference, which was to be attended by some 300 Islamic scholars from different parts of the world, was postponed on request of its participants who wanted more time to figure out ways to tackle the problems facing the Islamic nation.
Dr. Al-Turki, former minister of Islamic affairs, said the postponement would help Islamic scholars and experts make use of the resolutions to be taken by an emergency Islamic summit to be held in Makkah this year.
The meetings of the higher coordination committee for Islamic organizations, the World Assembly of Islamic Scholars, the World Council for Mosques and the Islamic Fiqh Council and the conference on media and Islamic unity have also been postponed to February 2006.
Al-Turki said the conference will discuss prospects of setting up a defense force within the framework of the United Nations Charter to confront foreign aggression and call for an international Islamic court of justice.
Meanwhile, the MWL extended its condolences on the death of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd and commended his great contributions to the Islamic world.
