JEDDAH, 27 August 2005 — President of UN General Assembly Jean Ping has commended the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd’s efforts to promote world peace and stability as well as his services for the development and welfare of humanity.
Earlier the president asked the assembly to observe a minute of silence and prayer in respect for the late king. King Fahd, who ruled the Kingdom for 24 years and played a significant role in world politics, died on Aug. 1.
Saudi Ambassador to the United Nations Fouzi Shubokshi said it was the first time in UN history that the heads of both the Islamic countries group and the Arab countries group addressed the assembly, extolling the contributions made by the late king.
Representatives of the groups of Asia, Africa, America, Western Europe and Eastern Europe made similar speeches. “All have expressed their deep sorrow over the death of King Fahd and expressed their confidence in the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah,” he told Okaz.
“The standing in silence by the General Assembly with all its members indicates the international reputation gained by King Fahd,” Shubokshi said. He said all members wished greater progress and prosperity for Saudi Arabia and its people under King Abdullah’s leadership.
Former Lebanese Ambassador Khalil Al-Khalil said the holding of a special General Assembly session in commemoration of King Fahd was international recognition of his achievements. He noted the late king’s efforts to reach the Taif Accord which ended the Lebanese civil war.
Dr. Esmat Abdelmeguid, former secretary-general of the Arab League, described the UN General Assembly session on King Fahd as “international appreciation of his role in resolving global issues, especially those related to the Arab region.”
