JEDDAH, 8 September 2005 — Egyptian expatriates living in the Kingdom have given mixed response to the elections in their country. Hussam Redwan, who has been living in the Kingdom for 10 years, said the results are already known. He said, “The election is just to convince people and the world that there is democracy.”
Hussein Ahmad said that this multiparty election will enhance the image of Egypt in the world. He said: “Now we see more than one candidate contesting elections. Their election campaigns have been very smooth. It is heartening to see democracy flourishing in an important Arab country like Egypt. It sends a message to the leaders of the world who say Arab countries lack democracy.”
Talat Naser, another Egyptian, said, “I see democracy flourishing. We have political parties who have participated in the elections. At the end people will choose the president. We have a very strong opposition and they have great influence on people’s decision. If the current president wins the elections, it is because of his huge popularity.”
