SANAA, 18 September 2005 — Traffic accidents in Yemen have seen 1,390 people killed and more than 7,000 since January, a police report said yesterday.

The Traffic Police Department report said 2,770 accidents took place across the country during the period from Jan. 1 to Sept. 10.

Poor road and vehicle conditions, reckless driving and speeding are main causes of the high death toll in the largely impoverished country, in which up to 2,000 people a year are killed on the roads.

According to official figures, 22,800 people were killed and more than 136,000 injured in around 129,000 accidents in Yemen between 1990 and 2004.
