CAIRO, 12 October 2005 — The Egyptian Television Network has refused to give permission for the Ramadan drama series “Raya and Iskeena,” to be aired on it local channels, stressing that it contains too much violence, profanity, and inappropriate scenes for the average viewer.

Director Jamal Abdul Hameed has denied rumors that the reason behind the Egyptian Television Network’s refusal to air the drama was due to the provocative nature of certain scenes.

“Raya and Iskeena,” stars Egyptian actors Summaya Al-Khashab and Abla Kamel, and is based on a true story of two sisters who murdered innocent women and then proceeded to rob them of their most valuable possessions. The series covers seventeen different murder cases, some of which actually took place.

The drama was filmed at the Egyptian “Media Production City,” and was scheduled to be aired during the holy month of Ramadan on the satellite channel MBC, when the number of viewers is the highest.
