JEDDAH, 7 December 2005 — The Ministry of Commerce yesterday named two businesswomen to the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s board of directors, bringing the total number of women on the board to four.

Madawi Al-Hassoun and Olfat Qabbani, who were among 17 women candidates in last month’s elections, were appointed to the board by the ministry along with four male members.

Lama Al-Sulaiman and Nashwa Taher are the other two members on the board. They won their seats in the elections that saw women contesting for the first time. Their victory has encouraged other businesswomen to participate in the upcoming chamber elections in the Eastern Province.

The other four appointed members are Mohammed Al-Mutlaq, Abdullah ibn Mahfooz, Ibrahim Al-Subaiea and Abdullah Ridwan.
