HYDERABAD, 14 December 2005 — Congress candidate Chittem Ramamohan Reddy was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Makthal constituency in the bypoll held on Saturday.
The counting of votes was taken up yesterday.
Ramamohan Reddy trounced his nearest rival by a huge majority of 40,124 votes. Ramamohan Reddy is the eldest son of slain Congress legislator Chittem Narsi Reddy who was killed alongwith his younger son and nine others in a Maoist attack at Narayanpet on the Independence Day this year.
Telugu Desam, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, CPI and CPI-M supported the Congress nominee in consonance with an understanding that all major parties should not field candidates against a family member of a legislator killed by the Maoists.
However, five independents and Bahujan Samaj Party and Janata Party candidates joined the poll fray. They all forfeited their security deposits.
