JEDDAH — The ALJ Community Services Program has set Aug. 31 as the last date for entries for the second Science and Technology Research Award organized by the ALJ in concert with the Arab Foundation for Science and Technology Foundation, according to an ALJ press statement yesterday.
The award aims at promoting research to suit the needs and requirements of society and industry in the region.
Through Abdul Latif Jameel Award for Scientific Research, the ALJ Community Services Programs also aims at developing a regional mechanism to invest in the research cadres in Arab universities and the centers of higher learning.
The ALJ award seeks to encourage research to find out solutions for problems faced by Arab society in all areas, including industry, production, services and health.
The foundation has already received 16 entries. They are research projects in the fields of the biotechnology, environment, water, energy and health from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Jordan and Qatar.
The foundation expects more entries to come before the last date expires.
An international panel of judges from Arab countries will scrutinize the entries and select the best ones to be eligible for the ALJ support. The ALJ selected and financed four projects last year.
The Arab Science and Technology Foundation is an independent, nongovernmental, non-profit organization based in Sharjah, the UAE. Scientists and researchers in the Arab world and beyond have contributed to the organization’s establishment.
ASTF is currently seeking to set up branches and links in world capitals that have scientific entities willing to participate in its activities.
