The worst action is the one that brings the biggest disaster to the largest group of people. These types of actions are often the result of negligence and lack of discipline. This carelessness leads to public distrust.

If a traffic police officer is not serious about his job then he will lose respect from drivers, resulting in chaos and accidents. This applies to other professions as well.

It is very sad to see that the virus of lackadaisical attitudes toward work has infected professions where people’s lives are at stake, such as doctors, pilots and chemical engineers. I read in an Arabic newspaper about a worker at a gas company who was responsible for the leakage of more than a half-ton of gas. This posed a great danger to the lives of people living close to the gas factory.

Thankfully, the leak didn’t result in disaster, but it could have thanks to one person’s disregard for his responsibility to be on top of safety procedures. A small accident like that could have claimed thousands of lives.

The lack of seriousness by border patrol officers can expose the country to dangers and illegal contraband. The lack of seriousness by parents exposes children to drug dealers and crime. The lack of seriousness of the public at large toward pressing social problems leads to terrorism. The lack of seriousness from municipal officials and supervisors can lead to sad disasters, such as the collapse of the hotel in Makkah in the run-up to the Haj.

Dangers can be avoided if we were more serious about doing our jobs.
