RIYADH, 30 January 2006 — An eighty-year-old Saudi was shocked when a government employee in the civil department demanded that he prove that he was married. The man in fact had been married to his wife for fifty years and wanted to add her name to his family identification card. The employee told the man that he was registered as a single man in the system. The old man did nothing more than laugh and leave. The incident soon became a joke to the man, his children and especially his grandchildren who demanded that he marry their grandmother.
