DHAKA, 8 February 2006 — Demonstrators in Bangladesh burned a Danish flag yesterday during a protest against newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Thousands of protesters shouting “hang the cartoonists” and “boycott Danish goods” took part in the rally outside a mosque in the capital organized by the student wing of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh.

“About four thousand people took part, but the rally was peaceful,” said Abdur Razzaq, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Police.

“The Danish government should give exemplary punishment to the cartoonists. Unless the Danish government issues an apology, every Muslim should boycott Danish goods,” leader of the student group, Shafiqul Islam, told the rally.

The cartoons were first printed in a Danish daily and have since appeared in newspapers in a number of other countries, mostly in Europe. Muslims regard the drawings as blasphemous.

Supreme Court Stays Trial of Kibria Murder Case

Within three hours of framing of charges by the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Sylhet against the accused of Kibria killing, the Supreme Court yesterday stayed for three weeks all the case proceedings.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury passed the order of stay upon an application for leave to appeal to overturn a High Court verdict that had discharged the plea for further investigation into the sensational Kibria murder case.
