Police Searching for Stabbing Suspect

JEDDAH, 25 August 2006 — Al-Samer police are looking for a 30-year-old Saudi who stabbed and axed his uncle recently. The victim, who is in a critical condition, was admitted in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The young man reportedly assaulted his relative a second time in the past three months. The uncle was standing in front of his house when he attacked him the first time. Police arrested him then but released without any charge. However, he did not stop threatening to kill his uncle and his daughters. The second attack came when the uncle was going out to the market. The man struck him from behind with an ax and when he fell the suspect stabbed the fallen. Then he ran away leaving behind the weapons. Saleh Al-Ghamdi, lawyer of the victim, said he hoped the accused would surrender himself to police. The reason for the man’s aggressive behavior is not known, though some attributed it to mental disturbances, the daily said.

Pakistani Stabs Aging Muezzin

BURAIDAH, 25 August 2006 — A Pakistani stabbed his aged sponsor to death at a village mosque 80 kilometers away from Buraidah on Tuesday, Al-Watan reported yesterday. The 70-year-old man, who also served as a muezzin (caller to prayers) at the mosque, was observing a non-obligatory prayer before the sunset prayer, when the laborer attacked him from behind. The assailant ran away reportedly after committing the crime. People who came for prayers shortly afterward found the man in a pool of blood and called in the police. They took him to hospital, but he died on the way. The police are searching for the suspect.

Swimmer Drowns in Cordoned Beach Zone

JUBAIL, 25 August 2006 — A Saudi drowned in the sea while swimming alone around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday. No one on the beach could rescue him because the place was very deep though he screamed for help. The 36-year-old man is survived by his wife and three children. Several drowning cases have been reported near this spot. The Coast Guard has appealed to the public not to swim in this part of the beach where there are signs posted that swimming is prohibited in the area, the daily said.
