Increasingly violent behavior among young men in the Kingdom’s large cities is an alarming trend. This indicates the need for increased discipline against these young perpetrators.

Newspapers made much ado about an incident in Yanbu last week where a group of young men attacked members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in a public garden for families. They attacked the commission members who were trying to prevent them from entering the family park. One of the attackers hit a commission member on the back of the head so hard that the man lost consciousness.

In Riyadh a commission member was taken to hospital after an attack on him.

The commission exists in order to prevent people with bad intentions from fulfilling their sick desires that can hurt society.

Assaults against police also seem to have been featured prominently in the press lately. Al-Madinah reported an incident in Taif where four men were arrested after they kidnapped a security officer and used his patrol car to rob houses and gas stations. The men were arrested when they tried to run a checkpoint.

TV programs and movies must be playing a role in giving crooks their bad ideas. And young men who drop out of school instead engage in robbing gas stations, houses, pharmacies and engaging in other forms of petty crime.

I’m positive that the authorities are dedicating their time and effort to control this menace. It is very important to find solutions for these crimes so that it doesn’t spread in other cities and further jeopardize public safety.
