JEDDAH, 20 August 2006 — Students displayed new skills they have acquired during a summer program at the graduation ceremony held at the Jeddah Secondary Industrial Institute here over the weekend.

Parents watched as their children conducted a live demonstration that included car mechanics, electrical basics and first-aid procedures.

The summer program that spanned four weeks ended last week, with 192 students aged 12 to 18 years successfully completing courses in introduction to workshop basics, car maintenance, electrical basics and safety, plumbing basics, first-aid procedures, and fire safety and prevention.

The summer program aimed to discover the hidden potential of the students in performing simple handy jobs around the house. All of them were awarded certificates. Their trainers from the Civil Defense, hospital and companies dealing in car maintenance, and electrical and plumbing operations were also honored.

“More than 1,000 students have taken part in the annual summer program since its inception five years ago. It is designed to support the educational and social development of youth by providing them opportunities for growth and skills’ development,” the organizers said.

As an incentive for excelling, the registration fee of SR500 was fully refunded to about 90 percent of the students whose overall final scores in the program was 100 percent, and only 10 percent of the students received a 90 percent score giving them a refund of SR400 from their original registration fee.

“This unique and signature motivational tool is meant to encourage students to utilize their potential to the ultimate while enjoying the benefits of learning new skill sets, making them their own house heroes,” Rami Abu Ghazaleh, CEO of Al-Baik, said in his address. “We’ve been truly humbled by the overwhelming response from parents and students alike. By continuously fostering and nurturing the students, we provide a platform for broadening their horizons and enhancing their skills that can be applied at home, school and the workplace,” he added.
